Tungsten

Tungsten, also called Wolfram, is a steel-gray colored metal found in nature. The name Tungsten comes from the swedish language where "tung" means heavy and "sten" means rock. 

Tungsten is most famous for it's physical properties. It has the highest melting point of all metals and high strength at high temperatures.

Tungsten is often used for it's good conductivity for heat and electricity as well as for it's high absorbation capacity for radioactive radiation and X-rays.

Tungsten is found principally in one of two forms viz combined with iron and manganese oxides, which is called wolframite WO4 or combined with calcium as calcium tungstate which is called scheelite, CaWO4, the later being the most common. The tungsten compounds seldom exeed 2 % of the orebody.

Tungsten-rhenium

Tungsten-rhenium

By adding rhenium to tungsten it is possible to further enhance the caracteristics of pure tungsten. Tungsten-rhenium shows even higher strength, lower brittle-ductile transition temperature and increased ductility. 

Advantages compared to pure tungsten
 - lower transition temperature from brittle to ductile condition
 - no brittleness in recrystallized condition
 - higher recrystallization temperature
 - higher thermal stability

Is an alloy wire of tungsten and 3% rhenium (Re). In comparison with the pure tungsten wire it has superior hot strength, and vibration strength, a higher recrystallization temperature, greater specific resistance and greater tensile strength.

Molybdenum

The high melting point of 2620 °C as well as its high-temperature strength allow the application of Molybdenum at temperatures up to 1900 °C. Depending on its level of deformation, the recrystallization of molybdenum starts between 800 and 1200 °C. Between 1600 and 1800 °C a spontaneous grain growth takes place with a significant decrease in strength and hardness. Molybdenum and its alloys are mainly used because of their outstanding properties at high temperatures.
Advantages of Mo for high temperature applications:

 - High hot-strength
 - Low thermal expansion
 - Low heat capacity
 - High thermal conductivity

For some applications tungsten wire has to be plated to meet special requirements. This may for instance be to protect the wire from corrosion, to solder it together to other metals or to reduce the secondary emission of electrons.

Luma gold plated tungsten wire has as standard a coat thickness corresponding to 4+1 % of the wire weight up to wire diameters of 50 microns. For wires above 50 microns in diameter the coat thickness is 0,5 micron.

Gold Plated Brass

Gold Plated Brass Wire

Brass wire CuZn10 consists of 90% copper and 10% zinc.
Brass wire CuZn20 consists of 80% copper and 20% zinc.
Brass wire CuZn30 consists of 70% copper and 30% zinc.
Brass wire CuZn37 consists of 63% copper and 37% zinc.

These product has very good mechanical properties and corrosion behavior, comparable to that of copper. The low conductivity and the outstanding bending proof performance makes it the preferred choice for heating applications.
